Contactless Loan Service

Last update: July 15, 2020

Contactless Loan Service Now Available!

Given the current pandemic context, the reopening of public libraries must be done in several phases in accordance with the measures established by the government. Thus, even though access to shelves and common areas will remain prohibited until further notice, the Kirkland Library now offers a contactless loan service, by appointment, in compliance with health and safety standards.

To take advantage of this service, simply reserve the desired documents online using the library catalogue, or by telephone.

Afterwards, a library employee will contact you to arrange an appointment for pick-up, according to a special schedule. At that time, a bag identified with your name will be placed on a table between the two entrance doors which you will simply have to pick it up. As with any delivery that has been handled by a third party, we recommend that you quarantine your documents.

Citizens who have kept their books and documents at home since the beginning of the pandemic are invited to come and deposit them in the book chute before borrowing others. A quarantine will be observed for all returned documents.

LOANS/PICK-UPS

I would like to borrow some documents, can I go to the library as before?

No, the library remains closed to the public. No circulation in the aisles or common areas is permitted. Loans are made safely, without contact, and by appointment only.

How can I borrow documents?

You have to reserve the books you wish to borrow. We suggest that you use the library's online catalogue since reservations are immediate.

  • Access the online catalogue
  • Once you have found your document, click on Reserve and enter your library card number and password;
  • You can then click on Place Reservation and OK.

You can also reach the library by phone at 514-630-2726, ext. 3216, but there may be certain delays in making a reservation depending on staff availability.

As soon as your order is ready, a library employee will contact you to make an appointment for your pick-up in the designated area.

How many items can I borrow?

You may borrow up to 10 items at a time. In order for us to serve a maximum number of users, we suggest one pick-up appointment every 21 days.

Can I borrow anything other than books?

You may borrow all types of documents normally eligible for loan.

How long will the loan last?

Please note that items will be recorded in your file before you are contacted for an appointment. The loan period has been modified accordingly and you will therefore have the documents registered in your file for a period of 4 weeks. When your loans become due, you will be able to either renew your documents or return them in the book chute.

How will the contactless loan process work?

An employee will contact you to determine the pick-up date and time. It will be important to respect this time slot. Upon arrival, you must disinfect your hands and respect the physical distancing of 2 metres indicated by signs on the ground. The bag will be placed on a table and identified with your name and the date and time of the pick-up. The table will be disinfected regularly.

I have just reserved my documents. How soon will I hear from the library?

Unfortunately, we are unable to estimate how long it will take to process requests. We have to start the process with documents that were set aside before closing and then proceed with the new reservations. In addition, the library has a reduced staff which must follow health recommendations and social distancing at all times. We therefore thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience.

I was unable to attend my appointment or arrived late.  Can I still get my documents?

In order to ensure everyone's safety, we will have to reschedule your appointment in order to give you the documents. We will call you back to offer another time slot.

Do I have to quarantine the materials I receive from the library before using them?

As with any delivery that has been provided by a third party, we recommend that you quarantine your order.

MISCELLANEOUS

When will the library be able to welcome its members indoors?

The library will follow the recommendations of the Public Health Ministry. In Phase 1, which is contactless lending, there may be a pick-up service at the door, in the car, home delivery or opening of the library with restricted access to the reference desk only. For the Kirkland Library, it was determined that the safest way to serve the population based on available resources is to provide a pick-up between the two library doors.

We do not know when we will be able to take the next step. We will keep you informed of any developments on our website or through social media.

Can I contact you during this reopening period?

Of course you can. We will do our best to respond quickly, although some periods may be busier than others. If an employee is unable to answer you, you will be able to leave a message in the voice mailbox. The library is working with a reduced staff which must at all times follow health recommendations and physical distancing. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience.
