Recyclable materials

Recyclable materials

Since January 1, 2025, the collection of recyclable materials is simplified! The provincial government has entrusted Éco Entreprises Québec (EEQ) with the management of recycling across Quebec in order to modernize sorting centers, standardize the materials accepted and improve the recovery of recyclable materials.

No more complicated sorting!

All containers, packaging, and printed materials can now go directly in the blue recycling bin, without having to check recycling symbols or plastic numbers.

If it’s a CONTAINER, a PACKAGING,
or a PRINTED MATERIAL ...
it goes in the bin!

Once a week - on Fridays

In Kirkland, the collection of recyclable materials takes place once a week on Fridays, starting at 7:00 a.m. The recycling wheeled bin must be placed at the curb after 6 p.m. Thursday evening or before 7:00 a.m Friday morning and put away before the end of the day on Friday.

The collection of recyclable materials requires that the wheeled bin be properly positioned, by respecting the rules set out in the User Guide. Also, please ensure that the bin is placed on your property and not on the street, so it does not obstruct the street sweeper or the snow plows. Otherwise, the streets cannot be cleaned properly.
Your wheeled bin is the property of the Town of Kirkland and must remain on the premises when you move.

What can go in the blue bin?

ACCEPTED MATERIALS

Containers and packaging

Flexible or rigid, containers and packaging can be made of paper, cardboard, glass, plastic or metal. A container comes with a cap and a packaging is used to easily transport a product.

Examples:

  • Household cleaning product containers
  • Packaging, jars and containers of food products
  • Packaging of takeaway and prepared food
  • Aluminum foil and plates
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Cans
  • Bags of chips
  • All other container and packaging

Printed materials

The ‘printed paper’ category includes papers and other fibers on which text, motifs or images can sometimes be found.

Examples

  • Newspapers, flyers and magazines
  • Paper sheets
  • Envelopes
  • Notebooks
  • All other printed paper

Good moves

  • Empty and lightly rinse out containers.
  • Remove lids from jars and containers – except for small caps.
  • Separate different materials from the same container or packaging (i.e bag of cereals in a cereal box).
  • Crush aluminum sheets into compact balls, even when lightly soiled.
  • Place recyclables in the bin separately (i.e don’t put plastic bags in one bag)
  • Undo and fold your cardboard boxes, even the small ones.

REFUSED MATERIALS
  • Light bulbs
  • Pool items (liners, ladders and pumps)
  • Wood and construction residues
  • Wooden clementine boxes
  • Cork stoppers
  • Garden hoses
  • Saucepans
  • Garden chairs
  • Bulky items (sofas, household appliances, air conditioners)
  • Toys
  • Hazardous materials (HHW)
  • Batteries
  • Polystyrene (which crumbles)
  • Garden waste
  • Food waste
  • Syringes
  • Extension cords
  • Dishes
  • Clothing and fabrics

Three (3) types of containers and packaging are not accepted in the collection of recyclable materials and must be disposed of elsewhere than in the blue bin:

  • Pressurized metal containers (aerosols) → Bring them to the Ecocentre or wait for a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection.

  • Protective polystyrene packaging (recognizable by its tendency to break into small beads) → Drop them off in the designated recycling bin at the Municipal Yard.

  • Containers and packaging made of degradable plastic → Are not accepted in the blue bin, as they contaminate other recyclable materials.

Download RECYC-QUÉBEC Ça va où app (now available in English) to find out where to dispose of your materials (blue bin, brown bin, or Ecocentre).

Whether it’s a wheel, the lid or the axle, any part of your blue bin that’s broken or missing can be replaced at home, free of charge!

Bin Repair

  • The contractor hired by the City carries out repairs on damaged bins at residents’ homes every Thursday.
  • The bin to be repaired must be completely empty and placed at the curb after 6:00 PM on Wednesday evening, before the scheduled repair.
  • Every Tuesday at 2:00 PM, the contractor updates its list of bins to be repaired for that week.

    -  A repair request submitted before 2:00 PM on Tuesday will be scheduled for repair on Thursday of the same week.
    -  A repair request submitted after 2:00 PM on Tuesday will be scheduled for repair on the Thursday of the following week.

Submit a Repair Request Online

To submit a service request for the repair of your blue bin, click on KIRK the Dispatcher and look for the box labeled “BLUE BIN TO BE REPAIRED”.

If your blue recycling bin was not collected during the scheduled pickup, you can notify the Town promptly through the Online Request System.

When all conditions are met (blue bin placed on time, positioned correctly, and containing only accepted materials), the Town will instruct the contractor to carry out a corrective collection.

Once your request has been received, you will receive an email confirmation indicating the scheduled day for the corrective pickup and, if necessary, any adjustments to be made regarding non-compliant items.

The Consginaction Drop-Off Point is at 3713 Saint-Charles Boulevard. It is managed by the Quebec Beverage Container Recycling Association (AQRCB), the organization designated by the Provincial Government to ensure the proper operation of the deposit system and the processing of returned containers.

Two Ways to Return Your Containers:

  • Individual Returns: Insert your containers one by one into the automated machines. Refunds are available in cash or via secure electronic transfer.
  • Express Returns: Drop off your unsorted bags of containers. They will be sorted later, and refunds will be sent electronically only. You can easily track your deposits and refunds using the Consignaction mobile app.

Expanded Deposit-Refund Program

Since March 1, 2025, all ready-to-drink plastic beverage containers from 100 ml to 2 L are refundable at 10 cents each! This includes water bottles (still or sparkling), juice, milk and sports drinks.
