Public trees on municipal right-of-way

Every year, the Town of Kirkland plants new public trees in its parks and green spaces, as well as in street rights-of-way on private property.

As part of the “A Public Tree in front of my Property” environmental program, any property owner can ask the city to plant a public tree in the street right-of-way on his or her private property (two, in the case of a corner lot).

Regardless of location, all public trees remain the property of the city, which has sole authority to maintain them (pruning, bracing, and feeling).

Planting

The City uses various accessories to stabilize young trees at the time of planting. These items must remain in place until the city comes to remove them:

  • 2 to 3 years after planting: removal of stakes
  • 2 to 5 years after planting: removal of trunk protector

Tree Maintenance

  • Regular watering of the tree: during the two years following planting.
  • Shape pruning to give the tree the right structure: when the tree is 2 to 6 years old.
  • Sectoral pruning every 5 years: when the tree is 10 years old or more.

Responsibilities of the CITIZEN
towards the public tree on his/her property

Do not cut the branches, trim or prune the tree yourself

  • Even if the intention is good, improper pruning or trimming can cause harm to the tree (injury, fungal, bacterial, viral or other infection).

 

Do not bury the trunk with mulch, soil or other materials

  • Nothing should be in contact with the trunk to avoid suffocating the tree.

 

Never drill a hole in the tree, using nails, screws or any other permanent or temporary device

  • For example, to hang lights, a ladder, a bucket to collect sap water or other items.

 

Never install ropes, cables or chains in the tree

  • Over time, these items can put pressure on the trunk or branches and cause strangulation.

 

Do not use mowers or hedge trimmers near the trunk

  • To avoid damaging the trunk or causing injury to the tree.
