Coyotes in urban areas: Adopting the right habits

Coyotes are a natural part of the urban wildlife landscape. Generally wary of humans and most active at night, they may nevertheless venture into residential neighbourhoods in search of food or shelter.

Certain human behaviours, such as leaving garbage, food or pet food accessible, can attract coyotes and reduce their natural wariness of humans. By taking a few simple precautions, residents can help promote safe and respectful coexistence.

Keeping coyotes away from residential areas

  • Never feed a coyote or any other wild animal.
  • Keep garbage, compost and food waste out of reach.
  • Use containers with securely closed lids.
  • Pick up fallen fruit from your yard.
  • Keep dogs on a leash and cats indoors, especially at night.
  • Teach children to observe wildlife from a safe distance.

What to do if you encounter a coyote

  • Remain calm and slowly move away.
  • Keep your dog close to you.
  • Do not run or turn your back on the coyote.
  • Do not approach or attempt to feed the animal.
  • If the coyote approaches or refuses to move away, make yourself appear larger by raising your arms, making noise or shouting.

Report a coyote sighting

Reporting sightings helps wildlife specialists monitor the situation and plan any necessary response.

Coyotes are a natural part of our environment. By adopting responsible habits, we can help preserve their wild nature and promote safe coexistence for everyone.
