Garage sales

A garage sale requires a certificate of authorization from the Urban Planning Department.

Applicable regulations

Before planning a garage sale, it is important to understand the local regulations that apply:

In accordance with our current By-Law, garage sales for a maximum of two consecutive days are permitted once a year per household, except for the Community Garage Sale which is usually held in May and in September, and for which a permit is not required.

Signs and Posters

If you put up signs and posters to advertise your garage sale, you must make sure to take them down the day following the event.

Applying for a certificate of authorization

A fee of $15 applies.

The "Online Permit Management" platform allows citizens to submit a permit application online, track its status, and in many cases, pay the required fees and obtain the desired permit/certificate without having to go anywhere.

All you need are your plans and other required documents in digital format (photos of documents are not accepted) and a credit card. The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

To access the platform, you must first create a user account.

Online Permit Application

Your permit application can be submitted in person at Town Hall during regular business hours (17200 Hymus Boulevard, Kirkland).

To this end, we invite you to download and complete the permit application form, then submit it along with all required documents. Paper copies of the form are also available at City Hall.

A friendly reminder for garage sale vendors and buyers*

It is important to use caution when buying or selling items at garage sales, particularly if they are intended for use by children.

What sellers and buyers should do:

  • Stay informed about product recalls, advisories and important regulatory changes.
  • Carefully inspect all products to ensure they are not damaged, cracked, have missing parts or are missing the instructions.
  • If you have a prohibited product, such as a baby walker, Health Canada advises you to destroy the item so no one else will be able use it.
