Fire hydrants

Annual Inspection

** Please note that we will be inspecting fire hydrants in sector 6 – Timberlea over the next week, starting Wednesday evening, November 22. Inspection work will be carried out overnight from 11:30 pm to 7:30 am until Friday morning to resume this Sunday night, as of 11:30. **

The inspection of fire hydrants is conducted once a year, in the fall, to ensure that all hydrants meet operating requirements and safety standards in effect, before the freeze-up period.

In particular, these inspections aim to:

  • Ascertain that each fire hydrant is in good working order
  • Ensure that each hydrant has an adequate supply of water in case of an emergency
  • Measure water pressure, and pump out any hydrant that is not draining properly
  • Detect and repair leaks in the water system to ensure proper operation

Inspection work

  • Fire hydrant inspections are carried out in 6 separate areas, starting with sector 1, followed by sector 2, and so on up to sector 6 (see map).
  • Residences part of a same inspection area are notified of the date of upcoming inspection work in their respective sector, by means of a codeRED message sent within 48 hours of the start of the work.
  • Inspection work is carried out at night only, from 11:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., from Sunday evening to Friday morning, over a period of 4 to 6 weeks, starting in mid-October.

Possible drop in pressure and discoloration of the water

These interventions may cause a temporary drop in water pressure as well as cloudy or coloured water. If you are experiencing this situation, let the cold water run in the bathtub for approximately 15 minutes and, as required, repeat the process until the water runs clear. Please note that cloudy or colored water poses no risk to human or animal health.

To prevent staining clothing or damaging an appliance, be sure the water runs clear before doing your laundry or using an appliance that uses water.
